FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED INFORMATICS AND MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
LECTURER X2 PERMANENT (P8)

Walter Sisulu invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Lecturer in the Department of Applied Informatics and Mathematical Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver tuition for service modules in the Engineering diploma and advanced diploma programmes, and, upon approval of the new programme, the BSc in Data Science. The successful candidate will also contribute to curriculum development and participate in the full range of academic and departmental activities.
 
Key Performance Areas:
  • Deliver undergraduate lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions across any two of the modules, such as Computing Fundamentals (Introduction to computers), Programming, Data Science Fundamentals, and Database Management Systems.
  • Prepare, deliver lectures, and assess undergraduate students.
  • Prepare and regularly update curricula and course material for lectures in accordance with SAQA, CHE, and DHET requirements and maintain quality assurance.
  • Develop and improve on the curriculum content of the teaching materials and also the student module guide (SMG) for the subject/modules taught in line with industry trends and HEQSF requirements.
  • Coordinate all student programmes within the department as per the required standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in departmental activities as required, including research, continuous professional development, community engagement, partnerships, and collaboration strengthening.
  • Contribute towards Faculty and Departmental research initiatives.
  • Contribute to Academic citizenship and provide Faculty and University service.
  • Assist with Academic administration and Quality Assurance initiatives.
  • Perform and carry delegated administrative duties of the department.

Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or Information Technology.
  • Candidate must have completed undergraduate degree in any of the disciplines.
 
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) year’s lecturing experience in a tertiary institution.
  • Evidence of research publication/conference presentations will be an added advantage
 
Skills and Competencies Required:
  • Ability to teach introductory to intermediate undergraduate modules (Introduction to Computers, Introduction to Programming, Data Science Fundamentals), Machine Learning Techniques, Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision and Image Processing, Natural Language Processing.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Competence in: Student support and mentoring
  • Good communication and student engagement skills
  • Knowledge and competency of using Technology in facilitating teaching and learning, which includes using a Learner Management System such as Blackboard, Microsoft Teams.
  • Time management and organisational ability
  • Experience with data visualisation and modern data science tools
