Job description

The Lecturer will be responsible for teaching and mentoring of students within the Department of Electrical Engineering. The incumbent reports to the HoD in respect of the key performance areas listed hereunder.

Key Performance Areas: 

  • Teach and asses students at Diploma & Advanced Diploma levels for subjects/modules in the discipline of Power Systems & Electrical Protection within the department of Electrical Engineering.
  • Coordinate all student programmes within the department as per the required standard operating requirements.
  • Develop and improve on the curriculum content of the teaching materials and also the student module guide (SMG) for the subject/modules taught in line with industry trends and HEQSF requirements.
  • Prepare, regularly update curricula and course material for lecturers in accordance with SAQA, CHE, and DHET requirements and maintain quality assurance.
  • Participate in departmental activities as required, including research, continuous professional development, Community engagement, partnerships, and collaboration strengthening.
  • Contribute towards Faculty and Departmental research initiates.
  • Contribute to Academic citizenship and provide Faculty and University service.
  • Assist with Academic administration and Quality Assurance initiatives.
  • Liaise with industry including consultation work / collaborative research and other community service projects / engagements;
  • Performing and carrying delegated administrative duties of the department.

Minimum requirements

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering majoring in Power Systems.
  • Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is an added advantage.

 Experience:

  • A minimum of two year’s lecturing Electrical engineering or industry experience.
  • Candidates who have a record of research publication output will have an added advantage.

 Skills and Competencies required

  • Computer literacy and competency including Word, Excel, PowerPoint presentations, internet and retrieval of electronic documents.
  • Professional/Technical experience in the mechanical and construction industry
  • Be able to maintain professional relations between lecturers and students
  • Good end-user computer skills and knowledge of technology-assisted teaching such as Moodle, Wise Up, Zoom, Microsoft Teams & Skype
  • Sound interpersonal relationship
  • Competency in DigSilent Powere Factory and MatLab/Simulink
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Good Communication skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-driven and lifelong learner
  • Excellent preparation and organizational skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to conduct research
