FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

LECTURER: CIVIL ENGINEERING (P-08) PERMANENT

REF NO: WSU -BCC-FEBEIT 04/2026/04

Key Performance Areas:

  • Teach and assess students at Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels for the subjects/modules in the discipline of Transportation Engineering within the department of Civil Engineering.
  • Ability to teach at all levels (Diploma and Advanced Diploma) and supervise research projects.
  • Coordinate all student programmes within the department as per required standard operating requirements.
  • Develop and improve on the curriculum content of the teaching materials and also the student module guide (SMG) for the subject/modules taught in line with industry trends and HEQSF requirements.
  • Prepare, regularly update curricula and course material for lecturers in accordance with SAQA, CHE, and DHET requirements and maintain quality assurance.
  • Participate in departmental activities as required, including research, continuous professional development, Community engagement, partnerships, and collaboration strengthening.
  • Contribute towards Faculty and Departmental research initiates.
  • Contribute to Academic citizenship and provide Faculty and University service.
  • Assist with Academic administration and Quality Assurance initiatives.
  • Liaise with industry including consultation work / collaborative research and other community service projects / engagements;
  • Participate in the continuous development and improvement of tools for effective assessment of Graduate Attributes as stipulated in the ECSA Qualification Standards of the Programmes running in the department.
  • Performing and carrying delegated administrative duties of the department.

Minimum requirements

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering majoring in Transportation Engineering.
  • Professional registration with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is an added advantage.

 Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years lecturing experience in an institution of higher learning or industry experience.
  • Evidence of research publication/conference presentations will be an added advantage.

Skills and Competencies Required:

  • Demonstrated abilities to teach undergraduate students.
  • Problem Based Learning (PBL) Teaching skill.
  • Ability to mentor and guide students in their academic and career development, providing feedback and support for research projects.
  • Commitment to ongoing research, staying updated with advancements, and incorporating relevant findings into teaching.
  • Strong collaborative skills, working effectively with colleagues, industry professionals, and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), as well as email, internet and retrieval of electronic documents.
  • Knowledge and competency of using Technology in facilitating teaching and learning which includes using a Learner Management System such as Moodle, WiseUp, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Skype.
  • Proactive approach to improving teaching methods, integrating new technologies, and seeking feedback for self-improvement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
